Bafana Bafana forward Thembinkosi Lorch, who will be playing for the first time in the national team under coach Hugo Broos’ leadership, aims to replicate his excellent club form with South Africa ahead of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Morocco.

Due to injury setbacks, Lorch spent most of the 2021/22 season on the sidelines and was omitted from selection. However, he has since recovered and has rediscovered his fine form in front of goal leading to being selected to represent the national team.

“I think it was too soon for me [call-up], I didn’t expect it, but I knew it would come. My performance was going up, and I was helping the team [Orlando Pirates] win games,” said Lorch.

“I think I’m getting there; I’m not going to pressure myself; I will take it slowly until I reach my full potential. I’m getting there; you could see the last four games in the league; I gave my all.”

The 28-year-old revealed the mood in the camp as they are still preparing for Afcon qualifiers next week.

“The spirit in the team is high; everyone is looking forward to playing the game against Morocco, the coach is good, the team is young we need to work hard. It’s not going to be an easy game in Morocco; all we need to do is apply ourselves and do the right thing the coach wants us to do.”

Lorch described the 2021/22 season as very hard due to his injuries.

“I got a groin injury for six weeks, then a shoulder dislocation which required an operation which kept me out for three months. When I came back in early December, I had gained weight, so I had to work on my fitness first,” he concluded.
