A defiant Bongani Zungu has told Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos that he can contribute “massively” to the national team.

The Belgian coach was forthright when asked about the omission of Zungu, saying he would not pick Amiens star.

“I see what happened [with him] in France. I am very sorry, but this is not a guy who has to be with our group – for now,” Broos said after announcing the squad on SABC.

“I don’t speak only about his qualities as a player, but when you see his troubles with Amiens this year, he didn’t play in half of the games because there was trouble.

“It was not because he was not good enough but because of troubles. Three or four months ago, the trainer and the club chairman wanted to get him away.

“What is important is the attitude and the mentality of the player. One player can mess up everything because he doesn’t have the right mentality.

“For the moment, I will not pick Zungu because when I see what happened at Amiens, it can happen here and that I don’t want.”

Speaking on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube on Tuesday evening, the former Mamelodi Sundowns ace hit back at Broos, questioning the way he goes about his selection business.

“I’ve never met him; I’ve never spoken to him. If you take your phone or ask me [what happened] or [communicate that], I will not call you [for the national team]. Give me a chance to explain, but then the guy came to you [the media] and said what he said,” said the 29-year-old.

“Everyone knows I’ve always given Bafana Bafana everything; I went to the Afcon with a knee injury. Every time I wear the Bafana jersey, I always give 100%.”

He is confident he can add value to the youthful Bafana squad that Broos is trying to build.

“Whether you like it or not, I can contribute massively to the national team. I can. I’ve got quality, but what he said about me, I can say anything about him too.”

The former Pretoria University midfield grafter is being linked to Kaizer Chiefs and his former club Sundowns with his Amiens contract set to run out end of the month. He is yet to make a decision on his next home.
