Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has called the recent comments by former player Daniel Cardoso “tone-deaf”.
Earlier in the week, Cardoso had told local journalists that he doesn’t believe Chiefs can win silverware with the current focus on young players, while – in his opinion – too many experienced players left the club.
The comments had already caused a stir on social media and Motaung Jr. now addressed them, saying Cardoso is not someone who should speak on the matter as he himself didn’t win any trophies during his seven years at Naturena.
“With all due respect, you have never heard Dr Motaung coming to radio addressing comments disgruntled former players made but with Cardoso, he spent 7 years at the club as a senior player and won nothing,” he told Thabiso Mosia, as cited by Radio2000.
“It was a period where were least successful.
“It baffles me why he [Daniel Cardoso] would utter the word titles. It’s more of a slap in the face for our fans because he played almost all the games when he was here.
“It [Cardoso’s comments] was tone-deaf but we wish him all the best at his club.”
Chiefs will face Cardoso and Sekhukhune United in the DStv Premiership on Sunday (15:00). They need a win to keep their hopes to reach the CAF Champions League spot alive, sitting currently two points behind third-placed Orlando Pirates and three behind second-placed SuperSport United, who have a game in hand.
Sekhukhune, meanwhile, want to cement their top eight hopes, currently sitting in seventh spot with 32 points – making it for a very interesting encounter.
