Kaizer Chiefs are hot on the heels of Marumo Gallants marksman Ranga Chivaviro as they look to bolster their attack.

Chivaviro has been in sensational form for relegated Gallants this season. The 30-year-old forward joined the Limpopo side at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season. He signed a one-year deal with an option of a further year.

It remains unclear what the player’s contract status is following the club’s relegation. “Ranga signed a year with an option of a year,” said Gallants’ chairman Abram Sello on Sunday.

“We will sit down with him and his agent to discuss the future now that we will play in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.”

Asked whether the club had triggered the option, he said: “Yes, we triggered the option, but with us going to the Motsepe Foundation, we will have to look into the issue.”

A Kaizer Chiefs source confirmed that the club had contacted Chivaviro’s camp. “The club has contacted Ranga’s management team and expressed interest in signing him. If all goes well, they’ll meet this week and discuss the potential transfer,” the source told FARPost.

Chiefs are shipping out Caleb Bimenyimana after an underwhelming season and are considering Chivaviro.

The man nicknamed ‘Ranga Tanga’ scored 17 goals across all competitions this season. In the DStv Premiership, he netted 10 goals, while seven came in the CAF Confederation Cup.

OTHER INTERESTED CLUBS

Young Africans knocked out Gallants in the semi-finals of the CAF interclub competition after a fairytale run. He scored their only goal in the semi-final at home as they went down 4-1 on aggregate.

After his Confederation Cup performances, he caught the interest of Yanga, Azam FC, Pyramids of Egypt and Cairo giants Zamalek.

Asked about the offers, the South Africa-born forward said: “I’m going to leave that to my agent. For now, I want to go home, and be with my wife and my daughter. As to where I’ll be playing next season, I’ll leave that to my agent.

“He’s going to call me and update me. He knows what I want. For now, I want to get football out of my head. I want to give my time to my wife and daughter [five-year-old. I want to give them time because, with our busy schedule, we don’t have much time with families.”

Chivaviro has singled out the current season as his best as a footballer. Then-head coach of Gallants Romain Folz signed him after a trial at the start of the season.

“For me personally, this has been my best season as a footballer. I’ve scored a lot of goals, I’ve played a lot of games.

“It’s what you want as a footballer playing in my position. You want to play as many games as possible and score a lot of goals.

“It’s been a phenomenal season. I could have had more goals, but above all, it’s been a good season.”
