Hunt Sends Warning Over SSU Talent
SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has praised teenager Shandre Campbell after the Man of the Match performance in his Matsatsantsa debut this past weekend.
The 18-year-old was with United’s DStv Diski Challenge side last season, winning the club’s DDC top goalscorer award after netting 16 goals.
He was one of the four new players, who started against Richards Bay in the DStv Premiership at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, putting in a Man of the Match performance in the 2-0 win over the KwaZulu-Natal based outfit.
The striker assisted the opening goal by Terrence Dzvukamanja, while also having a hand in the winner by Etiosa Ighodaro. Campbell could have been on the score-sheet himself but his attempts, especially in the first half of the match, weren’t on target.
Hunt admits it was a good start for the player but warns one game cannot be used to fully assess him.
“I saw him last year, I watched him the whole of last year. He’s got a lot to do still but he’s definitely got ability,” said Hunt.
“I mean let’s judge people over a period of time, not over one game or two games. In South Africa we have one good game and then… Let’s judge him over a season or two or three.
“Good start for the kid yeah, should have scored in the first half. His work rate is good. He kept the shape.
“As I said he hasn’t trained with us for two weeks, which is a problem for me but what can I do, he’s at school.”
After the opening round of the 2023/24 campaign Hunt’s side is in pole position on the log with three points.
