Hlomla Dandala breaks silence on his sudden exit from The River

Fans were stunned after it was announced that widely-acclaimed South African actor Hlomla Dandala was leaving The River 1 Magic.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika recently about his sudden departure from The River, Dandala said that it was time.

He says what tends to happen with any career is that if you stay for too long, it becomes difficult to “pivot away from it.”

“If you have established yourself as a leading man and you play something that establishes you as being quite weaker and you don’t get out of it fast enough, it gets harder and harder over time.”

Dandala was initially happy with the character but after a while he outgrew it.

He says he got to a point where he needed to manage his career.

“And part of that is I don’t want to be locked in a situation that I don’t want to be in. It starts to damage your future as an actor.”

Luckily for the actor, producers were generous enough to understand his predicament.

“They were stuck between a rock and a hard place in that the structure of the show requires that it requires that one is duped and the other is duping.”

Hlomla Dandala adds that this is the “natural evolution of any show.”
