Gomes’ World Cup Is Over

South African referee Victor Gomes is among several referees whose World Cup assignment has ended.

The 39-year-old has been in charge of France’s group stage win over Australia as well as Spain’s Group E defeat to Japan.

He was on the sidelines as fourth official when Mateu Lahoz dished out 16 yellow cards in the quarter-final between Netherlands and Argentina.

However, that match was seemingly Gomes’ final 2022 World Cup assignment, as he appears among the match officials who were released by FIFA.

Gomes was part of the 36 referees of the FIFA World Cup, while his assistant Ziwela Zakhele and Souru Phatsoane (Lesotho) were among the 69 assistant referees.

It remains to be seen whether Gomes will return to Premier Soccer League football, with a source telling iDiski Times he’ll hang up his whistle, with his last DStv Premiership game being the recent Soweto Derby.

The news were confirmed by ESPN journalist, Dale Johnson who specialises on referees and VAR decisions.
