Former Soccer Player Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng Appointed in Senzo Meyiwa Trial
New Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, a former soccer player for Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, has been appointed to oversee the Senzo Meyiwa trial.
He takes over from Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, who was suspended for not delivering judgments on time.
The trial had previously been postponed due to Judge Maumela falling ill, but President Cyril Ramaphosa decided to suspend him and another judge for their delayed judgments.
Criticism arose about the slow progress in delivering justice, leading to the suspension of Judge Maumela and Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi. They were accused of not meeting the required deadlines for delivering reserved judgments.
To address these concerns, a Judicial Conduct Tribunal was established to review the complaints against them. The tribunal will investigate allegations of delayed judgments that exceeded the specified time frames.
