Former South African international Quinton Fortune has urged Manchester United new manager Erick ten Hag to rebuild the sleeping Premier League giants around right characters and not just focus on big name players.

Quinton, who played for United under the glory years of invincible Sir Alex Ferguson, said the Dutch manager must not fall into the temptatation of signing every available star on the market but go for players capable of fitting into Old Trafford philosophy.

“It doesn’t have to be big names. It’s got to be the right characters to fit into the culture of Manchester United. That is the thing to achieve again. It is very important. Not every single player will have to be better to coach but the humility bit is what has got United so much success,” the former wingback told Manchester Evening newspaper.

The Cape Town-born man said during his time, United had big characters such as Roy Keane but when it came to doing the actual business, everyone operated on the same level of humility.

“Yes, the teams I played in had individual characters but, when it came down to the team, there was so much humility in what they did and their work in winning the Champions League and championships but then they just came in ready to work again. So, for me, it’s the right characters,” the former Atletico Madrid player added.

The former wingback-cum-midfielder has since evolved into a coach with his last job being with Championship side Reading FC as first team coach having earlier cut his teeth at United Under-23.

The 45-year-old launched his career at Tottenham Hotspur as a teenager before signing for Mallorca, then Atletico Madrid in Spain where he impressed to attract United’s attention in 1999. He went on to spend seven trophy-laden seasons with United.

The UEFA Pro-Licence holder wound up his playing career with clubs such as Bolton Wanderers, Brescia, Tubize and finally, Doncaster Rovers in 2010 in England.
