A former Orlando Pirates player has revealed that 13 eye specialists told him he could no longer continue playing football.

Ex-Bucs goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo succumbed to an eye injury last year while training with TTM, now known as Marumo Gallants. The injury practically spelt the end of his playing career, with specialists saying it posed a considerable risk to his health.

“I’m still consulting medically until I reach a point where I’m satisfied with all the medical reports because already I’ve been to 13 doctors who are saying the same thing that I cannot play football anymore, which I cannot tempt God’s fate. I’ve done my part; now I’m trying to serve on a different path,” said the 31-year-old Mhlongo.

He spoke to journalists in Durban on the sidelines of the launch of a partnership with the international company 90minsplus. The breakthrough comes precisely three months after Mhlongo and his business partner Oupa Manyisa launched the My Football CV app.

The new collaboration with 90minsplus, a manufacturer of sports products, will see the two act as brand ambassadors for the company. They specialise in sports apparel, nutrition foods, sports and energy drinks, organic tea, and mineral water.

Mhlongo said his eye injury was a blessing in disguise as he gets to take a different direction. “The important thing is to focus on me and my health and not take risks because all the doctors I went to have already outlined all the risks I will be facing if I go back to football. The first one is to avoid any concussion-related injury of which as a footballer it’s impossible; that’s how I got injured anywhere.”

“I wouldn’t like to get into a situation like where Papy Faty was told to stop (playing football), but he went on when he came back, and he tragedy passed on the field.”

He further stated that he would make an official announcement about his plans after finalising all related issues. “The PSL and my attorney are handling those issues. Once everything is finalised with all diligence taken, I will make the official announcement as to where to go from here,” he added.
