Carlos Queiroz has announced his resignation from the Egyptian national team after failing to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup due to take place in Qatar later this year.

The Pharaohs were beaten 3-1 on penalties by the reigning African champions Senegal on Tuesday night.

Queiroz’s departure from the Egyptian side comes just a month after losing an Afcon final against the very same country.

The Mozambican-Portuguese mentor took to the socials to pen an emotional letter to Egypt fans, players and the Federation following their defeat to ‘The Lions of Teranga’.

“Dream is over. We tried our best, but today was not enough,” wrote Queiroz on his official Twitter account.

“From the bottom of my heart, my gratitude to the Egypt Federation for this honour of coaching the National Team.

“To all my players and staff, my recognition and humble thank you so much. You will always be in my heart. It was my privilege to work and be helped by such dedicated and capable professionals and wonderful friends. Without you, nothing could be possible for me in my life.

“I am very much proud of you, Lads. My best wishes and enormous gratitude to all Egyptian fans.”

However, the Egyptian fans have reacted negatively to their manager’s departure as they feel that he made wrong decisions which led to wrong results.

One Pharaohs fan tweeted: “In the end, you failed with your team, in everything, no proper planning, no clear technical strategy, bad players Selection. Unfortunately, you did not add value to the whole team. Yes, not your fault, but it is the sum of failures in a bad environment.

Another said: “Wrong decisions lead to wrong results. You said that you are not responsible for anything that is the true thing. Thank you for nothing.

The other supporter added: “Your choices were so wrong. We knew our players and advised you many times, but you insist that players can’t achieve our goals to reach the World Cup now bye-bye. Egypt didn’t play any football in 99% of their games and not deserved to win Senegal; the dream of World Cup evaporated.”
