DiepCity cancelled by Mzansi Magic after two years, despite nine SAFTAs nominations
Barely after two years of airing, Mzansi Magic has pulled the plug on one of its most followed drama series DeipCity. In the mix of its cancellation, Black Brain Pictures has announced that the drama series will be wrapping its scenes as the end nears.
The award-winning drama series ended as a shocker after being dupped as one of the best drama series to be aired on Mzansi Magic after Gomora and the now cancelled Ferguson Films production The Queen.
The production company has it that the show was only envisioned for two years, and the contract has finally ended. In a public statement, it said:
“DiepCity has always been envisaged to be a two-year production in partnership with Mzansi Magic now the contract is nearing its end. A deliberate and strategic move by Mzansi Magic, to offer viewers a dynamic show that would keep them glued to their screens and secure that slot,” read their statement.
However, in the mix of things, Creative Director of black Brain Pictures, Mandla N, said:
“DiepCity has been a hit on South African television and has introduced audiences to unique characters who have resonated strongly with fans. DiepCity fans have played a big role in the show’s success over the past two years, and we are thankful for their support.”

However, what leaves a lot to be desired is the fact that the drama series has been one of the most nominated soapies at the South African Film and Television Awards. Here are the nominations the drama series received:
Best Popular TV Soapie or Telenovela
Best Telenovela
Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela
Best Achievement in Art Direction- TV/ Telenovela
Best Achievement in Cinematography
Best Achieshow’s in Editing TV Soap/ Telenovela

However, taking it to Twitter, entertainment blogger Phil Mphel shared a thread revealing the cancellation of the drama series, and Mzansi had mixed feeling over its cancellation. He tweeted:

Twitter was set ablaze since some were not aware of the reasons behind its cancellation. Some have it that the drama series was fast losing its plot despite having a star-studded cast that includes Dawn Thandeka King and Mdudusi Mabaso.
In the mix of things, some vowed to put a petition for its continuation. Mzansi awaits as the drama series wraps its scenes with capped drama and thrills. On the other hand, Mzansi has been keen to know what’s next for their loved cast members since the drama series has confirmed its cancellation barely after two years.
