Davids – We Have Ourselves To Blame

Orlando Pirates coach Fadlu Davids says they only have themselves to blame after losing on penalties to Marumo Gallants, as he feels they should have won the game before the shootout.

After it ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of football at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Gallants prevailed in the shootout.

Davids says Pirates should have wrapped the game up earlier.

“Ja, I think we have ourselves to blame,” Davids said on SuperSport.

“Besides the penalty, they had, one turnover in the last minute, where they had the chance to score, they never really troubled our goalkeeper, and on the other hand, we had enough chances to win the game in normal time, in extra time as well.”

Davids says they made things difficult for Gallants in open play, but while they created good chances, they failed to make them count.

“Ja, that’s credit to the boys, how they applied the strategy to press high, to not allow them to play these short passes in the midfield,” he continued.

“Putting their bodies on the line, jumping into the next line and it was really successful.

“Then the moments out of those pressing situations where you have a three against two or four against three, we didn’t use.

“We have to lift the boys up now, out of the Nedbank Cup, our full focus now on CAF coming on Sunday.”
