Chiefs Players With Expiring Contracts

Kaizer Chiefs will have to make a decision on the future of six of their players, whose contracts expiring in less than three months.

The Glamour Boys had a major squad rebuild ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, with as many as 13 players released by the club – and they again find themselves in a situation where several contracts expire.

Head coach Arthur Zwane has continuously pointed out that his side are a work in progress, with more changes expected during the off-season.

This publication reported last week that the club are unlikely to hand Eric Mathoho a new deal, with his current contract expiring on 30 June, which would end his 13-year spell with Amakhosi.

But the 33-year-old is not the only player at Naturena whose contract expires. Chiefs will also have a sit down with Khune, who is the longest serving member in the side since he was promoted in 2004 by the late Ted Dumitru. Khune, 35, will see his current term expire in June and he has lost the No. 1 spot to Brandon Petersen again, but chances are that he might be kept.

Meanwhile, the future of Khama Billiat, who unfortunately cannot fight now for a new deal on the field, as he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to the injury, remains unclear. Billiat, who was named the PSL Footballer of the Season in 2015/16 season, will see his contract with Chiefs expire at the end of the campaign, and Chiefs are yet to indicate whether they’ll keep on him beyond June. He joined Chiefs in 2018/19 from Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is the same with Cole Alexander, Phathutshedzo Nange and S’fiso Hlanti, whose contracts will also expire in June, with the latter expected to be offered a new deal due to his permanent role in Zwane’s line-ups.

In addition, the deals of more than 10 players are currently running out in June 2024.
