CAFCC Wrap: Nine-Man Al Masry Shock Berkane

There were two draws and a win for nine-man Al Masry in the late quarter-final kickoffs in the CAF Confederation Cup first leg ties this evening.
Pyramids and TP Mazembe played out to a 0-0 draw at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo despite the home side having more than 70% possession and 20 shots at goal.
Despite showing the attacking intent, only two shots were on target with Mazembe showing defensive acumen to frustrate Egypt bound head coach Ehab Galal and his troops.
Bafana Bafana forward Fagrie Lakay had the bulk of the chances with his pace and direct running causing all sorts of trouble but it wasn’t to be for the free-spending North Africans.
The other Egyptian side in the competition Al Masry beat Florent Ibenge’s RS Berkane 2-1 after being reduced to nine men for more than half an hour of the tie at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria.
Led by two-time CAF Champions League-winning coach Moine Chaabani, Amr Marey handed them a 10th-minute lead but Berkane pegged them back in the 10th minute through playmaker Hamza Regragui seven minutes later.
But the Botola Pro outfit failed to make their numerical advantage count as they lost the game when veteran Tunisian defender Haithem Layouni netted a late winner.
And in the Libyan derby between Al Ahli Tripoli and Al Ittihad, there was nothing to separate the two sides at the Martyrs of February Stadium, with not many clear-cut chances created by both sides.
CAF Confederation Cup 1st leg quarter-final results in full:
- Simba SC 1-0 Orlando Pirates
- Al Masry 2-1 RS Berkane
- Pyramids 0-0 TP Mazembe
- Al Ittihad 0-0 Al Ahli Tripoli
