CAF Make Big Decision On AFCON 2023

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will now take place in 2024 due to the adverse weather conditions in Ivory Coast between the originally scheduled date.

Floods created by the West African monsoon have once again swept the country this year with several domestic games called off as a result.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed on Sunday at the Executive Committee meeting in Rabat, Morrocco, that no risks will be taken and the tournament will now take place between January and February 2024.

It’s been suggested that due to the FIFA World Cup being held this year in the same period, it was a decision made by the exco committee to pish the tournament back, rather than bringing it forward.

AFCON 2021 in Cameroon was held earlier this year after the global coronavirus pandemic made it impossible for the event to continue, with the virus spreading throughout the continent during the period it was first scheduled for.

It marks another problematic situation for African football, with the biennial event having been moved to the June-July periods due to some of the biggest stars being call-up during the middle of the European season, which a large percentage of the elite talents are key figures within. However, Motsepe stated there’s no other alternative at this point.
