Broos Defends Bafana Selfies After France Drubbing

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has defended his players against the criticism they faced for taking selfies on the pitch after their 5-0 drubbing against France.

Several Bafana players were seen taking selfies with their Les Bleus counterparts just seconds after the final whistle following their 5-0 demolition by the 2018 FIFA World Cup holders.

Broos, however, insisted he didn’t see anything wrong with his players wanting to catch a selfie with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Co.

“There you see the difference. For the players of South Africa it was something extraordinary, something unique in their lives as a player,” he said during his squad announcement on SABC1.

“So for France it was a friendly game. It’s normal that players here want to have a signature of [Kylian] Mbappe, the best player for the moment of the world. This is normal!

“So why criticise that after the game they wanted to have a picture with Mbappe? Come on, this is not important. The most important thing was that the level between the two teams was so big that we lost 5-0.”

The Belgian mentor continues to protect his players by lamenting that their attitude was right but also sometimes players can reach the ceiling when coming up against stronger opposition.

“I don’t think that we can say that the players didn’t fight for it,”

“But okay when the level is higher you have to fight more, some moments you are on the limit.

“I’m sure the players of South Africa, my players, wanted to do everything to have a good result, but okay the opponents was too strong. [Debate] finished.”
