Police minister Bheki Cele has confirmed that Deputy President Paul Mashatile was part of the convoy when members of his VIP protection allegedly assaulted motorists in Gauteng last month.

But Mashatile was not on the crime scene and did not witness the incident, Cele said.

The Minister of Police in South Africa, General Bheki Cele, spoke out about a recent incident involving an assault on the VIP protection services. This incident took place a few weeks ago on the N1 highway.

These VIP protection services were connected to the Deputy President of South Africa and the African National Congress, Paul Mashatile.

However, when the incident occurred, Deputy President Paul Mashatile stated that he was not present in that motorcade.

He said Mashatile was informed only later, when already at home, about what had happened.

Yesterday, Police Minister General Bheki Cele informed the nation that Deputy President Paul Mashatile was indeed part of the motorcade when the incident happened.

“Deputy President Paul Mashatile was in the VIP convoy but did not witness the assault,” commented Police Minister Bheki Cele regarding the motorist assaults that occurred in Gauteng last month.

The eight VIP officers are charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property and pointing firearms. They were granted bail this month and are expected to appear in court next month. -TimesLIVE
