Bafana Bafana’s opponents host Morocco at their own backyard | African News

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos will watch Monday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group K weird qualifier between hosts Liberia and Morocco with keen interest.

Broos will be interested in the game not only because the two teams are Bafana Bafana’s opponents but because Liberia are hosting Morocco in their backyard.

Bafana lost 2-1 away to Morocco and remain with a home meeting against the Atlas Lions, then Liberia in South Africa and Monrovia.

The game is going ahead in Casablanca on Monday after CAF ignored the South Africa Football Association (Safa)’s request that Liberia should not play its home AFCON qualifiers in Morocco.

“Safa hereby raises and officially objects to that arrangement as it goes against the principles of Fair Play,” Safa wrote weeks ago.

“The Moroccan Football Association will travel less and enjoy the benefits of home ground advantage more than anyone in the group.

“We understand the challenges of stadia on the continent, but we plead that it not be to disadvantage other countries or give unfair advantage to others.”

However, CAF ignored the request, and now South Africa, Morocco and Liberia will fight for two qualifying slots from the group, with Zimbabwe ruled out after being suspended.
