Less than 24 hours after a tragic incident that claimed the life of a police officer on the M7 in Durban, another multi-vehicle crash in the same area has left six people injured.

The collision, which involved six cars and two trucks, occurred on Thursday afternoon amidst heavy traffic due to the recovery efforts from the previous day’s fatal crash.

According to Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics, the collision occurred during a build-up of traffic as authorities were working to clear the aftermath of the previous incident.

“A total of six patients were treated and transported to the hospital,” he stated. The traffic came to a standstill, and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to avoid further congestion.

The previous day’s tragedy unfolded when a truck overturned, causing injuries to three individuals. While emergency workers were preparing to recover the truck, a devastating turn of events occurred.

A truck lost control and ploughed into the accident scene, resulting in the death of a police constable who was attending to the situation.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find a scene of total devastation. The out-of-control truck collided with two police vehicles, two trucks, and two civilian vehicles before veering off the roadway and coming to a rest down an embankment.

Three individuals were treated on-site and transported to the hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.

The Bellair SAPS is currently investigating the incident as a case of culpable homicide. Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, police spokesperson, provided details, stating, “It is alleged that a truck collided with two vehicles on the M7 towards the N2 freeway.

“A 36-year-old police officer tragically lost her life during the accident. The truck driver was taken to the hospital for medical attention.”
