AmaZulu Book MTN8 Semi Spot

AmaZulu are into the MTN8 semi-finals after beating Cape Town City 2-1 after extra time at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the home team who showed the early initiative, and Khanyisa Mayo fired over in the fifth minute. Two minutes later Taahir Goedeman’s long-range attempt forced Veli Mothwa into a save.
But it was AmaZulu who grabbed the lead, Augustine Kwem receiving the ball in the box from Gabadinho Mhango, Kwem turning well and firing past Darren Keet in the tenth minute.
Goedeman was off target in the 25th minute, while Mayo shot just over in the 28th minute, and again moments later. The same player had another chance in the 32nd minute and again was off target.
Mayo went just wide again in the 41st minute, but just before the half-time whistle, the birthday boy grabbed an equaliser, as Mayo made it 1-1 in the 45th minute.
Bonginkosi Ntuil was off target two minutes into the second half, while Mayo and Goedeman missed efforts moments later at the other end.
Mayo had another chance just past the hour mark, this time the ball going narrowly over the goal, while Ntuli was off target in the 68th minute, just before being replaced by Dumisani Zuma.
Mayo was off target again in the 78th minute, heading over Mothwa’s goal, while Rain Hanamub’s free-kick two minutes later took a deflection and Keet saved.
Brice Ambina forced a save from Monthwa in the 83rd minute, while Keagan Buchanan’s free-kick two minutes later went straight at Keet. Keet was needed again in the 86th minute, this time making a good save to deny Kwem.
Substitute Mdu Mdantsane had a chance in the 90th minute, but Mothwa saved and extra time was needed as it ended 1-1 after regulation time.
There were few chances in the first 15 minutes of extra. though just before the break Zuma had a chance in the box but shot over, while Kijally Drammeh’s attempt had the same result at the other end.
Lehlohonolo Majoro had a great chance to win it with ten minutes to go, as he got past Keet, but Taariq Fielies made a great last gasp interception before Keet was able to gather. Craig Martin forced a save from Mothwa moments later at the other end.
But Majoro didn’t miss in the 113th minute, following up to tap in after Keet had saved from Mhango. 2-1 AmaZulu.
It would prove to be the winning goal as the Usuthu substitute scored against his former team to book Brandon Truter’s team a spot in the last four.
