An official has sadly passed away after Nigerian fans invaded the pitch following the Super Eagles failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after allegedly being beaten by angry fans.
The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana, which was enough for the Black Stars to book their ticket for Qatar after the first leg had ended 0-0.
Ghana qualified via the away goal rule while the hosts were left wanting. The failure to qualify for the World Cup resulted in fans storming the pitch, with ugly scenes forcing players and officials to find shelter in the dressing rooms.
However, Zambian doctor Joseph Kabungo, who was working as the CAF/FIFA Medical Officer at the match in Abuja has sadly passed away.
Renown African journalist Usher Komugisha stated he was beaten to consciousness by angry fans and attempts to save his life were fruitless, while the Zambian Football Association said they’d wait for an official report from CAF on the circumstances of his passing.
“We take note that it is too early to dwell into the nitty-gritty of the cause of his death but will wait for the full report from CAF and FIFA on what exactly transpired,” FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said.
“He was a dedicated and widely loved member of our football community and his impact was vast, having also been part of the 2012 AFCON winning team. His death is a huge loss as Dr Kabungo was a friend and confidant to many generations of players and their families.”
CAF are yet to comment on the sad incident.
We, at iDiski Times, would like to express our condolences to Dr Kabungo’s friends and family.
