Comitis – Mayo Is Worth $2-million

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has revealed he believes Khanyisa Mayo, who had been linked with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs before signing a new deal, is worth $2 million (36 million).

It was impossible for any club locally to prise away the striker from the Citizens because they value him so much, and also interest from the Middle East.

Mayo courted attention locally and abroad after scoring 12 goals in the league last season to share the golden boot with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile.

Sundowns were reported to be interested in the son of Patrick Mayo, who just like his father, was a fine striker for Bush Bucks, SuperSport United and later with Chiefs before he turned into a defender.

Chiefs, too, were also rumoured to be interested in Mayo, with Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. confirming they were interested in the January window, but also insisting that Comitis wasn’t willing to sell.

Comitis now revealed they also had interest from the Middle East but he would ideally see him move to Europe, hoping his goals can help the club lift silverware this campaign.

“Mayo’s value is in the excess of 2-million dollars, in my opinion,” said Comitis on Tuesday.

“We are not going to compromise and sell ourselves short, and he also deserves to go to a big club.

“So we want to be patient. He himself understands that he possibly needs one more season. If Mayo gets 15 goals, it is going to be the hardest thing to keep him in this country.

“We have had a lot of interest from Qatar, we have had interest from Saudi Arabia, but I think he deserves to go to Europe. He has that ability and mentality for it, so we are patient.

“But I do think that he has a job to do with us here and I think with his goals I think we can certainly turn that into silverware.”

Following his exploits last season, Mayo signed a new deal with City and a few days ago the club handed him jersey number 10, a world famous number to show how they value him.

Another player who interested a club abroad was Cameroon hardman Brice Ambina, with chairman Comitis admitting he “was relieved” he was not sold.    

“We had another club from Latvia that approached us for Ambina,” Comitis added.

“We had a very, very lucrative offer for him and things didn’t work out and we were relieved that things didn’t work out because we are happy to keep him.

“I think Ambina is arguably the best number six that this club has ever had – as an anchor midfielder.”

City will open the new season against newly-promoted side Polokwane City at Athlone Stadium on Sunday (17:30).
