One of the officers investigating Thabo Bester’s case has shot & killed himself in Bloemfontein.

The police have confirmed the death of one of the investigators involved in the Thabo Bester prison escape case. The senior officer, who was also the provincial head of organized crime in the Free State, passed away under circumstances that are currently under investigation.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) management has chosen not to discuss the matter publicly.

Instead, they have dispatched internal employee health and wellness experts, including chaplains, to provide psychosocial support to the deceased officer’s family and colleagues.

While the police spokesperson, Brig Athlenda Mathe, did not confirm reports of suicide, it is understood from sources close to the investigation that the officer had taken his own life.

National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola paid tribute to the officer, describing him as a hardworking, loyal, and dedicated detective with 31 years of service.

The loss of the officer has left a void in the SAPS detective environment.

No further details regarding the incident have been provided at this time.
