Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has revealed what he believes would constitute success for his side this season.

As the campaign draws to a close, Barker has reflected on his side’s exploits so far and reckons they can finish stronger.

The Cape Winelands outfit has endured some tough periods this season, but Barker has been able to guide his side back to calmer waters.

After spending some time in the relegation zone earlier this season, Stellies are back on track and are alive in the race for a top eight finish.

They currently occupy sixth spot on the DStv Premiership table with 38 points from 28 matches and are in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

They face Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals of the competition at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off at 18:00.

WHAT WOULD MAKE THE SEASON A BIG SUCCESS FOR STEVE BARKER

Barker insists going all the way in the Ke Yona Cup this season and finishing inside the top eight would make the campaign a big success for them.

“It’s really to just take it one game at a time,” Barker told the media after their goalless draw with SuperSport United on Tuesday.

“We have two games to go in the league, and we have targeted to get to 40 points. We trust that it should be sufficient to finish in the top eight.

“The cup is a different competition, it’s not the same stress as the league, and we have done well. There’s no pressure on us, just reaching the semi-finals has been a success for us. Nothing is stopping us from having a full go because if we can make the final, then it would be a massive achievement.

Barker, one of the longest-serving coaches in the league, led Stellies to their highest finish last season and is hungry to bring more success to the club.

HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS

“You know, when you get this far in the cup, you have to try and go all the way,” added Barker.

“We are hungry for success, hungry to finish the season really strong. If we get to the final, then we can look back and say it’s been a good season.”
