Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala says it’s a worrying factor that a big team like Kaizer Chiefs have not players in the Bafana Bafana squad.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos didn’t include any Chiefs player in his squad to face Liberia in the African Cup Of Nations qualifiers.
Brandon Petersen, who had made the preliminary squad, dropped out for the final selection, with Broos’ side that won in Liberia not including a single Amakhosi player.
Tshabalala, who played 91 times for Bafana, was asked about Chiefs’ absence from the squad and insisted players need to perform at club level to enhance their chances of playing for the national team.
“I think we have a good squad and it’s only fair that the majority comes from Sundowns,” he said recently.
“Sundowns they’re playing good football, very organised, you can see there’s a structure, there’s a culture, there’s identity and if more players are coming from a team that has been consistent for over a number of years they will definitely add value and help the national team going forward.
“I mean when you look at Chiefs, I think there’s no single player as well that is in the national team which is a big worrying factor that a big team of Chiefs caliber doesn’t have a player that represents the team.
“But all is not lost [at Chiefs], there’s still an opportunity for players to perform and be consistent.
“Remember, performance starts at club level that will enhance your chances of being in the national team and if you not consistent at club level then you stand no chance of playing in the national team.”
