The 11 Players Cut From Broos’ Bafana Squad

Hugo Broos cut 11 players from his preliminary Bafana Bafana squad in preparation for the double header against Liberia.

The Belgian tactician announced his final 24-man squad during a live broadcast on SABC 1 on Thursday, eight days before Bafana will host Liberia at Orlando Stadium.

They will welcome the visitors on 24 March before facing them in Monrovia on 28 March.

With Zimbabwe still being suspended from international football by FIFA, two out of the three teams in South Africa’s group qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations – meaning the double-header between Bafana and Liberia will likely decided who’ll finish in second place behind Morocco.

Broos left out 11 players from his preliminary squad, including Brandon Petersen, who was the only Kaizer Chiefs player in the 35-man selection.

He also cut Khuliso Mudau and Sphelele Mkhulise, with the latter being out injured.

In addition, Richards Bay defender Siyanda Msani, Cape Town City duo Taariq Fielies and Khanyisa Mayo also didn’t make the squad.

Midfielders Miguel Timm and Grant Margeman were also cut by Broos, as were forwards Fagrie Lakay, Pule Mmodi and Kobamelo Kodisang, with Broos explaining he wasn’t sure about the intensity in the Portuguese second division to warrant a call-up for the in-form Moreirense winger.
