Cape Town mayor wants answers for the police raid at their offices

The South African Police have raided the offices of the City of Cape Town, including the office of Councillor Malusi Booi, MMC for Human Settlements.

The mayor’s office said he was awaiting information from police authorities on why the search and seizure operations occurred. The police raid was on Wednesday, 15 March 2023, at the Cape Town offices and the office of MMC Booi.

CAPE TOWN WANTS A REASON FOR THE OFFICE RAID

“I have been made aware that the SAPS have conducted a search and seizure operation at city offices, including the office of a Member of the Mayoral Committee. This is a matter that I take very seriously indeed,” says Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

He said that he was not privy to the reasons for the search and seizure operation, and the police had not yet briefed him.

It’s understood that the raid at the Cape Town offices was part of the police’s investigation into fraud and corruption. Police took Booi’s phone and staff members’ devices and documents,” as reported by The Citizen.

MAYOR PROMISE TO ACT SWIFTLY AND DECISIVELY

“I have therefore requested the Provincial Commercial Crimes Unit to give me a full briefing on the matter,” the mayor said.

Hill-Lewis said he made it clear to Booi that he would act swiftly and decisively should any substantive information emerge that casts a shadow on the integrity of this government.
