The African Super League will begin in August 2023 with up to $100-million (R1.6-billion) in prize money, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has confirmed.
A decision was reached on Sunday at the CAF Executive Committee, where a host of important matters were discussed, one of which was the confirmation of changing the CAF inter-club competition formats back to a two-legged final, as confirmed by iDiski Times in Edition 60.
“This will never happen again. It’s something I inherited, it’s something I could not change, the decision was taken before me. We will have a two-legged final because again,” he said about the decision after the controversial final in which Wydad Atheltic Club beat Al Ahly in their home ground – the venue which has hosted the last two Champions League finals.

Motsepe Confirms CAF Final Changes
And in the meeting held in Morocco today, it was also confirmed that the CAF Super League will begin in August 2023, with a total pool of prize money reaching up to an incredible $100-million, something Motsepe hinted was possible with the potential sponsorship and commercial opportunities the giant clubs of the continent would be able the generate.
There has been no further indication of the format of the tournament yet or how the teams for the Super League will be selected but the CAF Champions League will continue to run alongside the newly formed competition.
It has also been confirmed that the next Women’s Champions League will take place in Morocco in October 2022, the Futsal AFCON, was awarded to Mozambique and the Beach Soccer AFCON to Egypt.
