Death threat claims ahead of SAFA elections | African News

With just a day before the eagerly awaited SAFA national elective congress taking place at Sandton Convention Center on Saturday, some of the regional leaders have claimed their lives are under threat.

Two regional leaders from Limpopo, known to FARPost, were allegedly threatened by unknown men through calls to either vote for a particular candidate on Saturday or will be killed.

The race for SAFA’s top position is heating up with Ria Ledwaba challenging incumbent president Dr Danny for the presidency. SAFA Tshwane regional Chairperson Solly Mohlabeng is also a candidate.

SAFA has since confirmed during a press briefing on Friday that there are aware of the death and a case has been opened with the police.

“We have strengthened the security for obvious reasons, two of the members got death threats. We are not taking them lightly, we have opened cases with the Police and as the association we will also be opened a case because we don’t know (what might happen next) and we have a duty to protect our members,” SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe told the media on Friday.

“Yes, they received that (death threats) and we are dealing with it.

“Maybe before president comes in the rule of third parties what football constitution says about it so we will not focus much on it,” he added.

“We know that football people who are to vote are football regions, which are members, associate members and special members. So that’s where our focus is and that’s why we are protecting them.”

The elective congress will get underway on Saturday at 10am.
