  • An abandoned police station in Carletonville has reportedly been taken over by criminals, illegal miners, and drug users.
  • Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson expressed shock during a visit to the site and called for occupants to vacate the government-owned property.
  • Allegations have also emerged that officials are illegally renting out parts of the building.

Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson has expressed shock after discovering that a former police station has been turned into a haven for drug users, illegal miners, and other criminal activities.

Macpherson visited the dilapidated Carletonville police station on Friday, 10 April, where the building is now being used as a refuge for drug users.

The former police station, which includes holding cells, a mortuary, and staff housing, has been seized by syndicates and stripped down to its shell.

During the visit, it was evident that only bricks remained, showing that the structure once stood. Tall grass and weeds have since taken over the entire precinct.

The staff houses on the property have been illegally occupied.

Macpherson said the occupants must vacate the building, as it is government-owned property.

Some occupants told Kaya News that certain government officials are allegedly acting as landlords, renting out parts of the old police station for R500.

Macpherson has urged residents to stop paying rent to the alleged landlords.
