Pirates Make Decision On Ex-Bafana Captain

Orlando Pirates have parted ways with former Bafana Bafana captain Thulani ‘Tyson’ Hlatshwayo via mutual consent.

The 32-year-old defender arrived at the club in September 2020 after the status sale of the now-defunct Bidvest Wits as the national team captain and considered as one of the finest defenders in the DStv Premiership, having won the league with the Students under then-coach Gavin Hunt two seasons prior.

However, his stint at Pirates has not worked out with several indifferent displays eventually seeing him lose his place in the starting line-up and eventually the matchday squad for most of the current season.

“My dream to wear the black and white jersey of Orlando Pirates has been fulfilled,” the former Ajax Cape Town star said upon the annoucement.

“When I came here, I said I wanted a trophy, and we were able to deliver on that mandate. Unfortunately, the second season didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, and this is what has informed my decision to request the Club to grant me my wish of leaving because I still have a lot to give and a lot to offer in the field of play. This is something that I shared with Management.”

Hlatshwayo featured just 13 times for the Soweto giants during the 2020/21 campaign that ended trophyless and outside the CAF inter-club qualification spots.
