Mashamaite On Chiefs Departures & Rebuild

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite has spoken about the Amakhosi rebuild and the different reasons behind the comings and goings of players.

Mashamaite was a key member of the Chiefs side that last won the league, featuring in over a hundred games in the four years he spent at Naturena.

With Kaizer Chiefs releasing nine players last week, the former Bidvest Wits centre-back has tried to give some insight into what might play a role in the decision of the technical team.

“Especially around this time of the year people come and go, teams they rebuild and sometimes they feel they have to get rid of the old wood,” Mashamaite told iDiski Times.

“Obviously, the new coach coming in right now, has got certain plans about the team. Whether we are looking at experience, or people who have not really performed, those are the things that they will decide on.

“He’s the one that’s got the vision of how he wants Kaizer Chiefs to be. At the end of the day I don’t think it should pertain to how long someone has been playing for the team.”

The 2014/15 PSL Footballer of the Year, who played with the likes of Bernard Parker and Daniel Cardoso during his stint at Naturena, then went into the reasons why one coach might keep a player and why another coach might release them.

“Football is football, you can perform under one coach and not perform under the next,” he continued.

“Every coach when he comes into a team he has got his own structure. Some focus more on building a team towards a long term goal, and some are just looking for immediate results.

“You would imagine those who want to get immediate results most likely to stick with experience. If they want to build towards a long term future, they would look to gelling youngsters with just a minimum number of experienced players.”
