Sekhukhune United have secured Kaitano Tembo as their new sole head coach on a three-year contract.

Tembo replaces Owen da Gama who was sacked last week after just five games, while the club have retained former head coach MacDonald Makhubedu as part of the technical team with Thabo Senong.

It marks a bold move for the Sekhukhune hierarchy who would have been disappointed after only winning one league game in their second half of the season, having initially looked set to challenge for a top-eight finish with seven wins from the opening half of their debut top-flight campaign.

Tembo was sacked by SuperSport United in April after a 22-year association with the club, first as a player and then as a coach, and led them to the MTN8 title in 2019 as head coach, this after serving as an assistant to Stuart Baxter and Eric Tinkler.

iDiski Times reported of Tembo’s imminent announcement in Edition 57 of the newspaper, which came out yesterday.

His man-management as a disciplinarian approach is said to have been one of the key factors behind his appointment while his youth development record at Matsatsansa is something Bibina Noko are keen to make use of with the club notably on a drive for young talent across the country with recent trial sessions in Gauteng and Limpopo.

“I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Tembo to Babina Noko family. We are very much excited to have Mr. Tembo in our team, and we believe he will assist us in achieving the goals that we have set for ourselves as Sekhukhune United FC, we wish him well in this journey,” club CEO Jonas Malatji said.

Tembo will now look to revamp the first-team squad with the club having released 14 players last week as part of their preparations for next season.
