The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has scheduled a nationwide voter registration weekend for 20 and 21 June 2026.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo confirmed the initiative aims to maximise participation by allowing citizens to register at stations nearest to their primary residences.
The registration drive is a focal point of the IEC’s operational readiness. Mamabolo emphasised that an early announcement of the election date is vital for groups such as students, who must decide whether to register at their family home or their campus address.
Preparations have seen significant progress, with the Municipal Demarcation Board delivering 95% of the country’s 4,305 wards.
While legal disputes previously stalled ward delimitation in four KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, Mamabolo confirmed these matters are now resolved, allowing the final administrative boundaries to be established.
