Zungu – I’m Not Excited By Soweto Derby, I’ve Played Vs PSG

Bongani Zungu has insisted he is not excited about playing in the Soweto Derby, because of his Mamelodi Sundowns history and he’s faced opponents such as Paris Saint-Germain.

The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent when his contract with Amiens SC expires on 30 June and has been linked with a return to South Africa.

However, he did reveal that Mamelodi Sundowns are the only South African club who contacted his agent so far, while he’s also been linked with Kaizer Chiefs by local media.

“Honestly, it never has, I’ve never been excited about it [the Soweto derby],” he said during on interview on Sports Night Amplified.

“Maybe it’s cause I was at Sundowns. Sundowns is a very big…”

At this point, host Andile Ncube interrupts and tells Zungu that a Sundowns game doesn’t attract 90 000 at the FNB Stadium, before his co-host Mazola Molefe jumps in to remind his colleague that Zungu “has played in Portugal, in France and in Scotland”.

“I’ve played against PSG,” Zungu simply replies, ending the Soweto Derby debate.

Zungu, though, did also reveal that he could even return to Amiens, because the president is a huge fan of his.

“I cannot say it’s done with Amiens, you may never know, it’s football. This goes back to what people read in the tabloids. Amiens loves me, the president loves me,” he continued.

“He wants me to be at his club, he wants me to be there captain, he wants to offer me a good contract.

“He even said to me ‘you’re son was born here’, so I do consider it [returning to Amiens].

“After football I’m still young. After football I have my whole life still. It does have an impact on the decision on where I’m going to be, I’ve got a son now.

“It’s my life, it’s where I want to see him grow up – maybe there [in France], maybe here.”
