SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has addressed the club’s coaching shortlist and was asked whether former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is on it.

Matsatsantsa are currently looking for a new head coach after Kaitano Tembo was released with five games to spare.

Andre Arendse took over in an interim basis and managed to secure the club’s 22nd successive top-8 finish after beating Orlando Pirates in their final match of the 2021/22 campaign and Matthews confirmed the former goalkeeper is one of the candidates in line for the job.

“The board is meeting next week, there is a process underway at the moment in terms of a shortlist of candidates, which will obviously include Andre, otherwise we wouldn’t have given him the interim position, if we didn’t believe he was capable of holding onto it,” Matthews said on Powersport FM.

“Those two wins and the point that he has earned us to make sure we could pop over the line, that’s fantastic for him. So he’ll be one of the shortlisted candidates.

“We’ll make those announcements in the next couple of weeks.”

When asked whether former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter was on the shortlist, Matthews gave a political answer without revealing much.

“I’m not saying who is in the running,” he added.

“There will be three or four very good candidates in the running, including Andre, who we see also as a potentially good candidate.

“He ticks a lot of boxes in terms of continuity at the club and promoting from within and unearthing fresh talent that we’ve been very proud of our role in the development of Pitso Mosimane, of Gavin Hunt as established and brilliant coaches.

“I’m not going to pick any names like Benni [McCarthy] and Gavin [Hunt] and Stuart [Baxter] and all of those. There will be three or four names there and the board will consider them and make an announcement in the next couple of week.”
