A woman and two children have died after a house in Vosloorus caught fire on Thursday night. The cause of the fire was allegedly due to an unattended candle during loadshedding.
The 50-year old woman’s house was used as an orphanage. Two teenage boys managed to escape the blaze unharmed.
Unfortunately, two younger children who are reported to be girls, aged 7 and 9 years died.
It is alleged that a candle that was lit during loadshedding had fallen onto their bed and set their blankets on fire.
All three were pronounced dead on scene and were reported to have died from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find community members trying to put the fire out using buckets of water.
The 4-bedroom house in Villa Liza, Vosloorus was a safe haven for abandoned children. It is unclear how many children were cared for at the home.
Rolling blackouts are expected to last until Monday and the public has been cautioned to extinguish candles before going to bed.
Eskom has also urged the public to check their loadshedding rosters to prepare for the downtime.
