Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler said he was disappointed to not come away with the win after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch at the DHL Stadium.
While Tinkler felt his team were second-best in the first half, and perhaps fortunate to go into the break in the lead, he felt they did enough in the second half to warrant getting a result.
“Ja obviously, disappointed that we didn’t collect maximum points from this game and I think we obviously had a chance to do that,” Tinkler said in the post-match press conference.
“But I don’t think we started well first half, I thought they were better than us, there was more fluidity in terms of their play, a better understanding that they seemed to play with a little bit more freedom. You could see us at the beginning there was a lot of anxiety and nerves, we didn’t move the ball quick enough.
“We spoke about the importance of matching them in all areas in terms of the duels and the tackles but we weren’t doing that. Our pressing wasn’t very, very good and they hurt us down the left-hand side, quite often, with Mendieta, and he caused us a lot of issues in that first half and we needed to snuff him out, which we didn’t do in the first half, and you know yes, they hit the crossbar with a ball in behind, a very simple ball in behind us where we didn’t react but then we had our own chance on the opposite side.
“Sometimes that’s the way football is, you don’t play well and you create chances and we hit the post and then we got the lead. Probably we didn’t deserve to come in at halftime one nil up, but we got that goal, came in at halftime and I thought we looked to rectify that problem, especially down the left, and I don’t think they really hurt us as much in the second half as they did in the first.
“I thought we started to control the game a lot better. I thought we created three good chances in my opinion that we should have capitalized from, which we didn’t, in poor decision-making, poor first touch and then ja, the referee should have given a foul in my opinion because Bala was brought down, was pulled, referee doesn’t give it ball goes wide, cross at the far post and we’re outnumbered and they get the equalizer.
“And then from there on I thought, we made a couple of changes. And you could see the intent was to try and go win the game, but you got to do it smartly. You know, you can’t just go gung ho and then leave yourself exposed at the back but ja, I think probably for everyone else entertaining but for me, not so much.”
