A young central defender, who grew up in Canada but has South African roots, is currently under assessment at Cape Town Spurs.

Sam Gardner, a 1.95m tall defender, who played for FC Edmonton in the Canadian Premier League, has been training in Cape Town for the past two weeks hoping to impress Shaun Bartlett.

Gardner moved to Canada as a youngster, and the left-footed centre back graduated through the college football system, playing for NCAA Division One Grand Canyon University.

“People who know me or have seen me play would describe me as very composed, a player who is comfortable and elegant on the ball,” Gardner told iDiski Times

“I have a very wide range of passing and can hit long diagonal balls across the pitch.

“I’m a leader who can organise the back four, reads and understands the game well from a tactical view.

“My size also allows me to be strong in the air in duels and being a goal threat is something I’m continuously working on.”

The 24-year-old has been impressed by the standard of football in the country so far.

“Impressions of the football so far is that it’s quick, on and off the ball,” Gardner said.

“We’ve played two exhibitions vs other opponents and the game can get very direct at times.”

Gardner is happy to back in South Africa, where he spent a lot of his childhood. His father is from South Africa, while his mom is from Zambia.

“I love this country, South Africa,” he continued.

“I spent a lot of time growing up at my dad’s place in KZN, Durban, a small town called Port Shepstone… Every time I’m there the people treat me like family and it’s something I really appreciate. The weather is a nice bonus as well.”

Gardner is hoping to sign a contract with Spurs, and help the club get back to the top flight.

“I hope I can sign a contract with the ultimate goal of playing in the PSL,” Gardner added.

“Regardless if that dream comes true, playing here in SA will only develop my game and make me a better player.”
