Renowned South African publicist Maria McCloy dies at 50

The acclaimed publicist, DJ and fashion designer passed away at Milpark Hospital on Tuesday evening, according to a statement released by her family.

Renowned South African publicist Maria McCloy has died at the age of 50.

According to a family statement released on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, McCloy passed away at Milpark Hospital on Tuesday evening due to heart failure.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our beloved sister and media industry giant, Maria McCloy (50),” the statement read.

“Her kindness, warmth, generosity and unwavering love for those around her touched many lives and will never be forgotten. She had a special way of bringing people together, and her presence brought comfort, laughter and love to all who knew her,” the family added.

McCloy worked as a DJ, publicist for stars such as Thandiswa Mazwai and as a fashion designer.

In late January, she hosted her star-studded 50th birthday celebration at The Bannister Hotel in Braamfontein, with DJs Bionic, Kenzhero, Glen Lewis and Cleo on the lineup, alongside live performances by Thebe Lenyora and Joe Nina.

She is survived by her mother and her two sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha.

The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. Memorial and funeral details will be communicated in due course.

Tributes have since poured in on social media, with friends, colleagues and celebrities remembering McCloy as a vibrant and influential figure in the entertainment and media industry.

Media personality Minnie Dlamini wrote: “What a loss 💔🙏🏾 Rest easy Queen and thank you for the culture ❤️”

Broadcaster Azania Mosaka shared: “Modimo wa Kgotso! So heartbroken 💔 A rockstar of our generation is gone.”

Actress Lorcia Cooper said: “Oh no, it can’t be 💔 Sincerest condolences to family and loved ones🙏🏾”

Singer Buhle Mda wrote: “Sending love to the family ❤️ Thank you for everything Maria Podesta 🤍🕯️ May you be well received Queen.”

Melanie Bala said: “It’s unbelievable 💔 Rest in peace Maria 🙏🏽🤍🕊️”

Actor Thishiwe Ziqubu added: “This is so heartbreaking 💔 Comfort, strength and healing to her family and friends 🕊️”
