President Cyril Ramaphosa

Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka will subpoena President Cyril Ramaphosa to answer questions sent to him around the theft of foreign currency from his Phala Phala farm.

Ramaphosa has been sent 31 questions seeking details on the theft and alleged cover-up but is yet to provide his response.

Gcaleka says Ramaphosa failed to respond by the extended deadline of 18 July.

Instead, he requested another extension which was denied the same day.

The president will now be served with a subpoena to force him to provide a response within seven days.

“The PPSA would like to reassure the public that the matter remains ongoing and those other investigative tools and methods are being employed to establish the veracity of the allegations that gave rise to the investigation,” Gcaleka says.

He now has seven days to respond to the questions as the Chapter 9 institution invokes its subpoena powers in line with Section 7.4(a) of the Public Protector’s Act.
