Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi feels their fixture against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League on Saturday could hold a huge effect on their season.
Sundowns welcome their former head coach Pitso Mosimane who’s secured back-to-back African Champions League titles since his move to Egypt – to FNB Stadium this weekend.
This comes after they wounded the African champions with a historic first win in Cairo last month to put them in pole position to advance as winners of Group A alongside the Red Devils, Al Hilal and Al-Merrikh.
Mngqithi has talked up the importance of the fixture despite their unbeaten start to the Group of Death and stated he feels it will be a real spectacle and advertisement for football on the continent.
“We are going into a very tough encounter. It’s a game that has so much insight and a game that can determine our season,” he said ahead of the game.
“It is also a game of consequence as both Al Ahly and ourselves are looking for a result that can maybe get us into the quarter-finals or stamp their position in the group stages, also considering that they lost the recent match against us at their home ground.
“Obviously, they will now come with vengeance hoping to try and upset us. But it’s a match that I think is enjoyable to the spectators.
“I believe when two big clubs face each other with a mentality to try and win the match and not just play for a draw or consolidate their place in gaining a point, it becomes a very interesting match for the spectators.
“So I believe that’s one thing that will make the match very special for the spectators because both teams will be looking for a result and whichever way it goes, it will have a positive spinoff in the public eye.”
