Like father, like son: Prince George adds to royal tradition at Eton College

A young royal has just started an entirely new chapter, one that comes wrapped in generations of family tradition behind it.

Prince George started his first day at Eton College on Tuesday, 8 September, following in his father, William, Prince of Wales, footsteps.

William and his wife Kate, Princess of Wales, escorted their 13-year-old son to the historic Berkshire school, where he was greeted by headmaster Simon Henderson and provost Nicholas Cole.

Prince George arrived dressed in a jacket, shirt and tie, before changing into Eton’s distinctive uniform of a black tailcoat, waistcoat and pinstriped trousers with a stiff white collar.

He crossed the school’s historic School Yard, a cobblestoned quad centred on a statue of King Henry VI, who founded Eton in 1440.

Both William and his brother, Prince Harry, attended Eton before him. William started in 1995, and Harry followed in 1998.

Prince George previously attended Lambrook School near Windsor, alongside his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

What makes Eton so significant

Eton is one of Britain’s most prestigious schools. It educates boys aged 13 to 18, with around 270 new students accepted each year.

The school has produced 20 of the UK’s prime ministers, including Boris Johnson and David Cameron, along with actors like Hugh Laurie, Damian Lewis and Tom Hiddleston.

Fees currently sit at roughly £65 000 (R1 413 100) a year.

There’s something genuinely striking about seeing a family tradition span this many generations, the same cobblestones, the same uniform, the same statue in the quad.

Whatever else changes, some things clearly stay very consistent for this family.

What’s the biggest family tradition in your own household?
