How has Le Roux fared in Europe so far?

Stellenbosch youth product Luke Le Roux has been consistent in Europe, and FARPost looks at how he has fared so far.

It is almost three years since the defensive midfielder left DStv Premiership side SuperSport United to join Swedish Allsvenskan side Varbergs BoIs on a four-year deal in February 2020.

The 22-year-old hit the ground running on his first campaign featuring in 21 league games for Varbergs, who had recently gained promotion to the top-flight in 2019, as per transfermkt.

Last season, the former South African Under 17 captain only missed four league games due to an injury he sustained at the start of the campaign. His performances led to him being voted as one of the best midfielders in the entire division.

His impressive displays attracted interest from several clubs in Sweden (Hammarby), Belgium (Cercle Brugge) and the Netherlands (Sparta Rotterdam). Recent reports are that one of the biggest clubs in Sweden, IFK Goteborg are mulling on signing him.

He has been an ever-present figure in the Varbergs engine room since moving abroad in 2020. This season, he has played 13 of the 15 league games played in the league so far, with his club sitting in 12th spot on the log standings.

Le Roux has played for all South African junior national teams, but he is yet to make his senior debut for Bafana Bafana.

His club’s head coach Joakim Persson has previously tipped him for a future in Europe’s top-five leagues.

“He’s one of the first players I put on the pitch. He’s never produced a bad performance, never. His lowest level is very high, but I think we can make him become a little more offensive in the game,” Persson tells KickOff.com.

“Luke has it, but he doesn’t believe in it sometimes, he’s very comfortable with the ball, and he doesn’t want to throw [possession] away. As a midfielder, he’s comfortable finding his teammates, but his vision too, he sees a lot in the game.

“But what he can improve is finding that last pass a little more often to get more assists or to give the team goal chances, which I saw a lot more of in the last ten games of the season,” Persson previously told KickOff.
