Google’s Next Chrome Update Adds Three New Generative AI Features

With the release of Chrome M121, Google has announced the introduction of new generative AI features that aim to enhance the usability of the browser. These additions include a tab organizer, a writing assistant, and the option to customize the artwork and themes throughout the browser.

To enable these features, users will need to flip on the “Experimental AI” toggle in the Settings page, accessible through the three-dot dropdown menu.

The Tab Organizer feature is designed to simplify the management of open tabs in Chrome. By leveraging built-in AI, the browser will automatically suggest ways to classify open tabs and offer the option to create groups.

This can be particularly useful for users who have multiple recurring tabs open. Clicking on the “Organize Similar Tabs” option will prompt the AI to aggregate open pages based on topics. For example, tabs related to shopping might be clustered together, and the AI could suggest a name like “Ski-trip shopping gear.”

Another practical application of the new AI features is the text assist tool. This experimental tool aims to assist users in drafting text, including Google reviews or social media posts.

To enable this feature, users can select “Help me write,” allowing the tool to finish sentences or suggest options to continue the text. Customization has always been a key aspect of Google tools like Mail or Docs, and now it extends to Chrome web browsers.

Users can personalize the browser’s visuals, which Google considers an extension of the AI wallpapers recently developed for Pixel phones. To customize Chrome, users can select the “Customize Chrome” button on the side panel and instruct the AI to generate a theme.

By searching for a description such as “small beach town” or “Blade Runner vibes,” users can preview the AI-generated theme options before making a selection.

These new AI features introduced by Google’s Chrome update will undoubtedly compete with Microsoft’s AI-infused Bing engine. Microsoft’s Bing introduced AI-powered tab grouping and a text composition helper in September.

However, Chrome continues to dominate the US browser market share by a significant margin, with Bing typically falling into the “others” category, well below competitors like Firefox and Opera.
