- Two suspects were arrested in Sandton for impersonating the Mayor of Nala Municipality and misusing emergency equipment.
- The driver allegedly pretended to be a mayoral driver while under the influence of alcohol, and the passenger falsely claimed to be the mayor.
- Both face multiple charges and are expected to appear in court soon.
Two suspects have been arrested for impersonating public officials and misusing emergency equipment in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The duo was arrested on Saturday, 02 May 2026, while Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were conducting routine patrols in the city.
After being stopped by officers, the driver of the vehicle introduced himself as the driver of the Mayor of Nala Municipality, claiming he was transporting the Mayor.
The female passenger supported this claim, identifying herself as the Mayor and providing personal details to officers.
However, due to growing suspicions and the fact that the vehicle was not state-owned, both individuals were immediately escorted to the Sandton Police Station for further verification.
“Investigations revealed that the female passenger was impersonating the Mayor of Nala Municipality. The driver was found to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and in possession of illegal blue light equipment,” said Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson.
It has also been established that the driver is an alleged figure affiliated with a political party in the Free State.
“The driver was charged with impersonating a police official, driving under the influence (DUI), and the unlawful use of blue lights. The female passenger was charged with impersonation. They were both detained at Sandton SAPS and are due to appear in court soon.”
