Today, Lichtenburg says goodbye to Eunice Nortman, a veteran police officer whose death has left a community mourning a woman who spent 34 years serving South Africa. Nortman, 53, worked in the local Crime Intelligence Unit. She died on 19 October after being struck by a vehicle at a shopping centre in Lichtenburg.

According to reports, Nortman had warned the driver that she was about to cross at a pedestrian crossing when the vehicle allegedly accelerated towards her. She died hours later. The circumstances surrounding her death have drawn attention to the incident, which has also resulted in criminal charges against a 23-year-old suspect.

For a town where Nortman was described as a household name, her death represents a deeply personal loss. Resident Anton van Eeden said the incident had affected the community, with some residents struggling to come to terms with what happened.

Her career in the South African Police Service spanned more than three decades. Away from her professional duties, Nortman had celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary this year with her husband, who is also a warrant officer.

Today’s funeral comes as the legal process surrounding her death continues.

The suspect, Akilesh Gupta, appeared in court on Tuesday facing a murder charge, alongside charges relating to allegedly driving without a valid licence and contravening the Immigration Act.

According to the supplied report, Gupta entered South Africa from India two years ago on a visitor’s visa that has since expired. He is expected to return to court next Friday. The allegations against him have yet to be determined through the legal process.

As Nortman is laid to rest, her 34 years of service remain a defining part of her story. For her family, colleagues and the Lichtenburg community, today is about remembering a life that extended far beyond the circumstances of her death.

Her passing leaves behind grief, difficult questions and a community saying farewell to one of its own.
