Dolly Parton Dies at 80, Family Announces

Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced on Tuesday.

Her nephew Bryan Seaver, the son of Cassie Parton, announced her death in a video posted on social media on behalf of the family.

Seaver said Parton had asked him years ago to make the announcement when the time came. He described the moment as one of deep sadness for the family but said they believed Parton was at peace.

Family announces Parton’s death

Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, reflected on growing up around the country star and travelling with her from an early age.

He said Parton had opened doors not only for members of her family but also for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and other creatives.

The family and the team responsible for Parton’s legacy would work to ensure her influence continued, Seaver said.

A career spanning generations

Parton grew up in Tennessee before becoming one of the most recognisable figures in country music.

Her career produced globally recognised songs including Jolene and I Will Always Love You, helping establish her as a household name far beyond the United States.

She celebrated her 80th birthday in January 2026 by releasing a new version of Light of a Clear Blue Morning.

Just days before reports of her death, her official website noted that she had received 82 new global sales certifications across 14 countries, including South Africa.

Health challenges followed husband’s death

Parton had faced health challenges in recent years and postponed a planned Las Vegas residency.

She had also stepped back from producing new music following the death of her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, in March 2025 at the age of 82.

Dean’s death ended a marriage that had lasted decades.

Parton leaves behind a music and entertainment legacy that reached audiences across generations and made her one of the most celebrated figures in country music.
