Chiefs Coach On No Outfield Players Selected For Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard has reacted to only one Amakhosi star being called up to the Bafana Bafana squad by Hugo Broos.

The Belgian tactician had named his 35-man preliminary squad for the double header against Liberia later this month.

The squad, which will still be trimmed from 35 to 23 names, included 10 names from Mamelodi Sundowns, four from Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, respectively, but just one from Chiefs. in Brandon Petersen.

Sheppard has now reacted to the sole Glamour Boys player in national team colour, something almost unheard for a club of Chiefs’ stature, saying they’re backing Broos’ selection and will work harder to get more of their players into the Bafana fold.

“We’re all here for the nation and it’s up to the coach to select he feels that’s going to do the nation proud,” he said.

“We are there to support him. Of course, as a coach, we’d love to see our players in the national team but the [Bafana] coach has got to make a selection and we’ve got to support that selection.

“And of course we’ve got to work hard to improve our players that our players can be up there for selection.

“But like I said it’s important for us, as a nation we are together and we will support the decision of the coach. Yes, we will work harder to make sure he will select more of our players.”

While Bafana only play later in the month on 24 and 28 March, Chiefs’ next assignment is a Nedbank Cup clash with Casric FC
